Fine Arts Academy Application 2023

 

 

The Fine Arts Academy at Churchland HS provides honors level courses designed to prepare motivated students from any Portsmouth High School for further study in the visual arts. These Fine and Performing Arts classes are open to any PPS High School student, with a completed application, portfolio or audition review and acceptance. In addition to the application process, Fine Arts Academy students must maintain good academic standing and maintain regular school attendance. Bus transportation is provided for Norcom HS and Manor HS students who are accepted.  

 

  • The Fine Arts Academy applications can be found at the attached QR code or live link and includes a portfolio review process. 

  • Students may apply to enter the academy in grades 8-11. 

  • The application process begins March 1st, 2023

  • Deadline to apply is April 7th, 2023

  • Applications will be reviewed and accepted applicants contacted by May 5th, 2023

 

The Fine Arts Academy program offers an honors level curriculum in visual art, and prepares students to take AP Drawing, AP 2D Design, or AP 3D Design in their senior year.  The art studio based curriculum explores various art processes, art history, and contemporary studio practice, while students develop a personal portfolio of artworks. This coursework will prepare students for college, scholarship applications and art careers. Portfolio development will include participation in multidisciplinary studio practice, maintaining a sketchbook, as well as participating in class discussions, peer critiques, and student exhibitions.    

 

 

FINE ARTS ACADEMY COURSES IN VISUAL ARTS

 

HONORS STUDIO ART I – 2 UNITS (9170H)

Grades: 9 & 10 (11- 12 optional ) 

Prerequisite:  Fine Arts Academy at CHS Acceptance             

 

Honors Studio Art I is designed for students who are on track to complete AP Studio Art in their senior year, and who are enrolled in the Fine Arts Academy. Students will explore periods in art history, art processes, and contemporary art practices. Studio processes and techniques for drawing, painting, printmaking, design, ceramics and sculpture are explored.  Emphasis is placed on individual creative problem solving and portfolio development.  Each student participates in peer critiques and maintains a sketchbook as part of their research and reflective practice. Cultural context, art history, and multidisciplinary connections are studied as it relates to individual creative concerns. Meaningful concepts are emphasized throughout students’ portfolio development.  

  

HONORS STUDIO ART II – 2 UNITS (9197H)

Grades 11-12

Prerequisite:  Honors Studio Art I

Fine Arts Academy at CHS Acceptance   

 

Honors Studio Art II is a continuation of Honors Studio Art I, for students who are enrolled in the Fine Arts Academy. Students continue to explore periods in art history, art processes, and contemporary art practices. Studio processes and techniques for drawing, painting, printmaking, design, ceramics and sculpture are developed further.  Emphasis is placed on individual creative problem solving and portfolio development throughout the coursework.  Each student participates in peer critiques and maintains a sketchbook as part of their research and reflective practice. Cultural context, art history, and multidisciplinary connections are studied as it relates to individual creative concerns. Meaningful concepts are emphasized throughout students’ portfolio development.

 

 

ADVANCED PLACEMENT COURSES IN STUDIO ARTS

 

The content of these courses focuses on portfolio development and is determined by the Advanced Placement Course Description. These AP Visual Art courses are intended for highly motivated students who have an interest in intensive artistic study, focused on studio practice.  Participation in The Visual Art Academy at Churchland HS is encouraged, however not required. Students can enroll in AP Studio Art with AP art instructor portfolio review. Art students successfully completing AP Art Studio courses will participate in the College Board Portfolio Evaluation.

Prerequisite: Honors Studio Art I & II or Portfolio Review

The content of these three courses meets the standards established by the College Board.
